5 Seconds Of Summer on their band name: 'We didn't expect to last long enough to think it through'

'She Looks So Perfect' pop-rockers 5 Seconds Of Summer have revealed that there's 'no big story' behind how they named their band and instead it was just chosen for the sake of filling a space as they needed a moniker for flyers and promotion so they could get onto the bill for shows.

Member Michael Clifford explained to 96.5 TIC FM in Connecticut that he plucked the name from his imagination at random and just announced to the other musicians that was what they would be known as from that point on: “I sent them a message and said ‘Hey guys, I’m naming the band 5 Seconds of Summer,’ and they were like ‘Okay. We’re cool with that.’”

Luke Hemmings added that because they were still at school when the group formed, they didn't expect any serious success or longevity so the band name wasn't that important to them: “When you’re in a band in school, you just pick your name because you’re not expecting it to last very long."

Hitmaker Ashton Irwin went on to confess that being catapulted into the spotlight made them grow up very quickly as everything has moved at an accelerated pace with their collective career over the past twelve months: “We’re still really young… we had to grow up a lot, really quickly in the space of a year. It was a big step for us boys, but we’re proud.”
