5SOS on One Direction comparisons: 'They've given us everything we have - there's no competition'

Australian hitmakers 5 Seconds Of Summer rocked the 2014 Billboard Music Awards last night (May 18) with their own blend of pop-punk and admitted that they're never offended when people compare them to boybands such as One Direction, because while they sound nothing alike they're all supportive of each other.

Speaking before the Billboard Music Awards to 95.5, the lads opened up about the comparisons people constantly draw between them and the 'Story Of My Life' heartthrobs, and drummer Ashton Irwin revealed there's no sense of competition and they're both so different musically that there's no tension there at all:

"Those are the bands we grew up listening to (Paramore, Fall Out Boy and Green Day)... the world needs a 5 Seconds Of Summer, we think. We aren't trying to be anyone else, we aren't trying to look like anyone else... 1D are secure at the top, it's not a competition."

"They've given us everything we have - it's an amazing thing of them to do, bring us on tour again. If America likes us, it's the coolest thing ever!"

One Direction's Liam Payne, meanwhile, recently told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper that he's jealous of the 5SOS guys because they're all so strong musically: "They are f***ing great musicians. I am a bit jealous of them. I am working on learning to play now but I wish I had put the time in like they did when they were kids. They are so massive right now."
