5SOS: 'We're a big lovechild of all our influences, we don't copy anyone'

Australian hitmakers 5 Seconds Of Summer have opened up about the bands that made them want to pursue a collective career in music and admitted that while they're definitely influenced by pop-punk, they never copy other acts.

Drummer Ashton Irwin revealed that for him, Green Day has been the band with the biggest influence: "We all were brought up in the time of Green Day and everything like that, and that type of music has just influenced us so much today."

Heartthrob Luke Hemmings added that 'I Just Wanna Live' rockers Good Charlotte inspire him: "Good Charlotte are the reason I started playing guitar. That's kind of why all of us started, bands like that."

Guitarist Michael Clifford, meanwhile, confessed that they don't try to emulate the bands they look up to and instead just pool the influences and draw on them when creating their own sound and style: "We're kind of like a big lovechild of all our influences. We take pop influences to stay modern because ultimately we wanna modernise 90s and early-2000s rock with nowadays pop."

The band recently recorded a cover version of Green Day's 'American Idiot' and Irwin explained that if the group heard their rendition of the anthem his life would be made: "I wonder if Greenday will ever hear our cover? Lol :) my life would be made hahaha."
