5SOS on boyband tag: 'We're challenging that - we're fearless'

Australian pop-punk group 5 Seconds Of Summer recently sat down for an interview with America's Billboard magazine and addressed the fact that they're constantly referred to as a boyband in the world's press.

Drummer Ashton Irwin admitted that while it can be irritating, they don't let it wear them down and instead they see it as a challenge to change the minds of people who have got them all wrong:

"Some people think, ‘Oh, they’re just another boyband. They’ll have a thing and then disappear.' But we’re challenging that thought. We’re so proud of the music we make -- we love it -- and we’re fearless. If anyone puts us down, we don’t care. Isn’t that somewhat punk -- not giving a damn what people say?”

Irwin went onto add that some of their own heroes once had to deal with the 'boyband' stigma so they feel as though they're in good company: "People get confused because we’re young and we have a female fan base. But so did Fall Out Boy. Pete Wentz was the Justin Bieber of 2007. Girls loved him, they obsessed over him.”
