5 Seconds of Summer have revealed their desire to make their next record "epic".

The Australian band released their self-titled debut album earlier this year and it reached No.1 in the US.

Writing is underway for the follow-up and it seems the quartet are thinking big.

They tweeted overnight: "Off to write some more with John and Roy! Wanna make this second album epic for you guys."

5 Seconds of Summer meanwhile are due to perform at this year's MTV VMAs.

The event is taking place in Los Angeles on Sunday (August 24) and the group will also vie for two awards.

They are up for the Best Lyric Video and Artist to Watch gongs.
