5 Seconds of Summer's Ashton Irwin apologises for 'letting people down' after falling ill

5 Seconds of Summer drummer Ashton Irwin has reached out to fans after his illness caused the group to cancel some commitments.

The band revealed on Wednesday (October 15) that the Australian had come down with appendicitis and was in hospital.

This means that they have to cancel a live performance at the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards on Sunday (October 19), as well as delaying a trip to Japan.

Irwin himself took to Twitter on Wednesday to tell fans: "Sup guys! I'm so sorry too anyone I've let down, I promise we will make it up too ya! I'll be better soon, thanks for all the love xx."

Speaking in more detail about the illness, 5 Seconds of Summer said in a statement:

"Ashton has come down with a case of appendicitis and had to have an operation. He’s doing great and will be back up & running in no time, but he’ll need to rest up for the next week or so.

"Unfortunately this means that we’ll no longer be able to fly back to the UK this weekend for the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards. We will also be postponing next week’s trip to Japan (more info to come soon)."
