Pop-punk band 5 Seconds Of Summer have opened up about how people perceive them in a new interview with Rock Sound magazine and confessed that they don't need approval. 

Speaking about being fans of harder genres, but being lumped in with the pop crowd, the lads explained that it's hard although they don't worry about it too much because they know that the public will eventually understand what it is they're trying to create:

"We love that some of our fans are following rock music and discovering new bands. We've never really sought approval or any type of recognition because in time, people will grow to understand us. We'll always defend what we believe in, but we've learned it's more effective to do that through actions."

"There have been signs that people are 'getting it', like when people we look up to and respect as musicians want to write a song with us. To be honest, we still think it's an incredible thing that people even listen to us at all!"
