5SOS's Calum reveals poignant advice given to him by drummer Ashton: 'It really hit me hard'

5 Seconds Of Summer have enjoyed a phenomenal year and one of the lads has now opened up about a piece of advice given to him by drummer Ashton Irwin that he will never forget.

The band's bassist, Calum Hood, told News Corps that Irwin made a huge impression on him when he explained just how much influence they have over fans now that they're famous:

"I was just sitting in the dressing room backstage in LA and Ashton came up to me an hour before the show and said ‘This is your chance to have an influence on people as a performer'. And that really hit me. I look up to Billie Joe (Green Day) and Dave Grohl and how they are on stage..."

Earlier this month, meanwhile, the 5SOS heartthrobs told Rock Sound magazine that they try to shrug off the 'boyband' label that keeps finding its way to them in articles because they know what kind of band they are and that's all that matters:

"We love that some of our fans are following rock music and discovering new bands. We've never really sought approval or any type of recognition because in time, people will grow to understand us. We'll always defend what we believe in, but we've learned it's more effective to do that through actions."
