5 times 5SOS got real about the power of music and their brotherhood

Aussie rockers 5 Seconds Of Summer have enjoyed an incredible rise to fame and now have followers across the globe, so we have founded up our five favourite quotes of theirs about music and the brotherhood they built within their band.

1. On how music is the one thing that helps them escape reality when they need it:

In 2014, 5SOS's drummer Ashton Irwin told his followers on Twitter that music helps him to escape and he finds it so cathartic and immersive, that it helps when he's feeling anything emotion that needs soothing:

"I'm not a perfect person, there's many things I wish I didn't do, but I continue learning. Bands really help me, when people make me feel like shit, the bands I love get me through everything, in times when I'm totally miserable."

2. On admitting the band saved them:

Calum Hood, who plays bass in the band, told Virgin Radio that being in the band really saved them all because they needed to get out of the town they grew up in: "It was kind of like our escape from reality, really. Because where we're from it's not really cool to be a musician."

Ashton Irwin echoed the sentiment in a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone and confessed that they all knew that if they were to make anything of their lives, they knew they had to leave their hometown: "It's not a nurturing place for music. As soon as I met these guys I thought, 'We're all gonna get the f**k out of here with this band.'"

3. On bullying and how finding one another helped them build strong personal foundations:

The lads formed the band at school when they were in their mid-teens and Irwin told B105 Radio that bullying is unfortunately just something that tends to follow people around, but now they can rise above it and even use negative experiences to create songs:

"I don't know, I think if we had that attitude still it wouldn't work so well for our band. If you have that attitude in the music industry it'll fail you. You have to let go of things... you've written songs about them, it gives you things to write songs about, but you shouldn't be out there with a vendetta against people who said you couldn't."

Member Calum Hood told Sydney's Daily Telegraph that they were "outcasts" at school, but formed a brotherhood when their band came together: "When we joined the band we were definitely outcasts - we weren’t bullied but we were outcasts. Being in the band just cemented everything, we’re brothers now, best friends."

4. On maintaining their bond within the band:

Shortly after singer Zayn Malik announced that he had quit boyband One Direction, Ashton Irwin explained to MTV News that he would be absolutely "devastated" if one of the 5SOS boys jumped ship because they're so close that he couldn't imagine doing this without them all:

"I heard about that and I was at rehearsal and I was looking at these dudes and, man, I’d be devastated if someone left our band, you know? I can’t imagine how the other dudes feel. And I wish him all the best. I hope… if that’s a choice he wanted to make, you know? I hope everything goes well."

5. On writing songs they know their fans will relate to because they're just like them:

Last summer, Calum Hood told News.com.au that 'She's Kinda Hot' was written as an anthem for their fans because they know that their own experiences are ones their followers can relate to: "Everyone has felt they kind of sucked sometimes, especially with us when the band first started and we didn’t fit into anything. The first shows we played were after metal bands and everyone hated us."
