Depeche Mode to resume world tour on June 8th, following David Gahan's cancer diagnosis

Depeche Mode are pleased to announce they will restart their interrupted 'Tour Of The Universe' in Leipzig, Germany on June 8th.

On May 12th, lead singer Dave Gahan suffered a severe bout of gastroenteritis, leading to his hospitalization and the cancellation of the Athens concert. While in hospital, further medical tests revealed a low-grade malignant tumour in Dave's bladder, which has since been successfully removed. At doctors' orders Dave Gahan must take a break until June 8th, to ensure that he makes a full recovery. The Leipzig show on June 8th will be the first concert following Dave's recovery.

Dave Gahan sincerely thanks his fans for their support, understanding and patience. Depeche Mode deeply regret any problems or inconveniences the cancellations and postponements may have caused.

Affected upcoming shows:

May 30th
London O2 is postponed and will be rescheduled to a new date, which will be announced shortly. Tickets purchased will remain valid.

May 31st
Depeche Mode's performance at the Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf is cancelled.

June 7th & 8th
Regrettably, the June 7th show in Leipzig must be cancelled due to doctors' orders, however the June 8th show will occur as planned.
No news about when Depeche Mode's world tour will resume

Andrew Zweck of Sensible Events, the U.K.-based Live Nation company that organises DM tours, said he’s expecting to be able to make a further announcement within a couple of days.

Gahan was hospitalized two days after opening the Tour Of The Universe in front of a 50,000-capacity crowd at Tel Aviv Ramat Gan Stadium May 10. He was taken in minutes before he was due on stage in Athens.

The Athens show had to be stopped, which was soon followed by the postponement or cancellation of further shows in Istanbul, Bucharest, Sofia, Belgrade, Zagreb, Warsaw, Latvia and Lithuania.

The next scheduled show is London O2 Arena May 30, followed by Holland’s Pink Pop Festival the following day.

Lieberberg, who is promoting the German dates beginning at Hamburg HSH Nordbank Arena June 2, told Pollstar he is still waiting for the go-ahead and expects the act to resume as soon as Gahan has recovered sufficiently.

Lieberberg just won a preliminary injunction in the Munich District Court against Smartfox Media, which has secondary Internet ticket portal Ventic, from trading tickets for his Depeche Modes and any others his company promotes.

Manic Street Preacher's Nicky Wire suffers from back spasms in Wales

Manic Street Preachers star Nicky Wire has revealed that he suffered a back spasm while performing in Wales last night.

The bassist, who is currently nursing a prolapsed disc, was halfway through the group's set at Llandudno's Venue Cymru Arena when he found it difficult to move.

In a statement on the band's official website, he said: "Last night it went into spasm on stage. This made it virtually impossible for me to move, let alone jump.

"I desperately want to carry on the tour but it will mean a combination of standing still, sitting down on stage, back braces and painkillers."

He added: "As you know, standing still is utterly alien to me on stage. I don’t want any sympathy but hopefully this will explain my lack of movement and general mood. Thank you for your understanding."

The band are scheduled to begin a three-night stint at London's Roundhouse tomorrow in support of new LP, 'Journal For Plague Lovers'.

Watch Nicky Wire talk to BBC Radio 6 Music about the early start of Manic Street Preachers below:

Eminem's new album 'Relapse' tops Billboard's 200

Eminem's "Relapse" brings the rapper back to familiar ground -- the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200. With 608,000 sold in its first week, it not only nets the biggest sales week of the year for any album, but the best since AC/DC's "Black Ice" began with 784,000 copies last October.

It's Eminem's fifth straight No. 1 debut -- and fifth overall No. 1. His only album to miss the top spot was his "Slim Shady LP" debut, which bowed and peaked at No. 2 in 1999.

His last studio set, 2004's "Encore," arrived with 711,000 after an abbreviated debut week -- it was released four days earlier than scheduled in order to counter leaks. A little over a year later, his greatest hits package "Curtain Call" took the stage with 441,000 in December 2005. Collectively, his six albums have sold 34 million in the U.S., making him the biggest selling hip-hop act in the SoundScan era (1991-present).

Eminem was seemingly the pied-piper last week in terms of new releases, as a cavalcade of artists unleashed their latest sets last Tuesday (19). Of course, it didn't hurt that the two-night "American Idol" finale, which wrapped up on Wednesday (May 20), brought a lot of people into physical and digital stores too.

Little Boots reveals her 'Pop Idol' audition

If you’ve ever been knocked back from an audition, take heart from this stunning pop star on the rise to fame.

Little Boots, aka Victoria Hesketh – she took her stage name from insane Roman tyrant Caligula (that’s the translation from the Latin) – was once shown the door by Simon Cowell.

She said: “I got to the third round of Pop Idol and was kicked out. Simon wasn’t very kind. But it helped give me a thicker skin in dealing with people. I swiftly realised that shows like Pop Idol are no short cut to the top. That comes from hard work. Pop Idol was an experience but litle else.”

Little Boots has been kicking about LA with Katy Perry, Kanye West and other famous faces, but she is missing her home town of Blackpool. Speaking to Look magazine, on sale today, she said: “The hottest trend in Blackpool is blow-up dolls, fake breasts and wigs. I haven’t worn fake breasts on a night out – though I probably need to as I’ve no boobs! I miss the fish and chips though.”

Her cracking debut single New In Town is out this week and is on course for chart glory.

Morrissey marks 50th Birthday with hometown Manchester gig

Singer Morrissey has marked his 50th birthday with a sell-out gig and a rapturous reception from fans in his hometown of Manchester.

Friday's show at the Apollo saw Morrissey in high spirits as he cracked jokes and shook hands with the crowd.

A noisy standing ovation welcomed Morrissey as he first came on stage and announced: "Fifty gruesome years!"

The gig featuring both Smiths' classics and Morrissey's solo work was part of an ongoing sell-out world tour.

Smartly dressed in black suit and tie, the singer began the gig with This Charming Man - an iconic track from his time with The Smiths.

Other Smiths' hits on the night included Girlfriend In A Coma, Ask, How Soon Is Now? and Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others.

While from his solo playlist, Morrissey sang I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris and First Of The Gang To Die.

He also sang his latest single Something Squeezing My Skull - and then complained about its poor performance in the charts.

"You would need a miner's helmet and a degree in anthropology to find it in the shops," he told the crowd.

'I love you'

During the gig, the band broke off from the agenda to play Happy Birthday, to which the audience sang along.

"I'm not 50, I'm actually 40-10," responded the singer.

Throughout the evening, Morrissey teased his audience.

He would point the microphone at individuals, asking them if they wanted to say anything, then pull it away before they got the chance.

Finally he gave in, allowing two fans to speak.

"I can't quite believe it. Happy birthday Morrissey, mate," said one man.

A young woman then declared: "I love you, you handsome devil."

Tickets for the special homecoming gig had sold out in 15 minutes.

The occasion was marked inside the Apollo with drapes over the bar featuring a backdrop of Morrissey on stage with the words: "Who Put the M in Manchester?"

Morrissey has remained close to his roots despite his global fame.

He formed The Smiths with guitarist Johnny Marr in 1982.

The group went on to achieve huge success and a loyal fanbase with their very particular angst-ridden sound and lyrics.

The band split in 1987 and lead singer Morrissey released the solo album Viva Hate just a few months later.

Several albums have followed including 2009's Years Of Refusal.

Massive Attack plan new album and world tour

Bristol based trip hop pioneers Massive Attack have been hard at work on their new album, with the band reportedly planning a huge 150 date world tour.

Massive Attack are a hugely influential force in British music. Formed out of the legendary Wild Bunch Soundsystem the band combined elements of hip hop, funk, dub and rock into one stunning package.

The group released three stunning albums before going on hiatus. Returning with '100th Window' in 2003, the band were essentially now just a solo act helmed by Robert Del Naja. However with long term collaborator Daddy G now back on board, it seems as if new sessions are beginning to bear fruit.

In an interview with US magazine Billboard Del Naja revealed that the group are planning a comeback. "The album is out in October and we're touring in September, so there will be a two-week discrepancy where we'll politely request the audience's attention while they hear some new songs that have been re-mastered," Del Naja said.

In the past Massive Attack have used a variety of guest vocalists, with Liz Fraser memorably chilling spines with her turn on 1997's 'Teardrop'. On the new material the group have continued to rope in guest stars, with Elbow's Guy Garvey suggested as a possible collaborator.

Speaking to BBC 6 Music Robert Del Naja revealed "we've done about three tracks together. Guy's been co-writing with us and he's done a couple of vocals."

"When people come into the space we're in or vice versa you have this inside information that you don't really divulge that this is probably going to be it, and it's going to be short and sweet, and hopefully really exciting and something beautiful will come off it," Del Naja said of the collaboration process.

Del Naja also revealed that the band are planning an enormous comeback tour. "We'll do the U.K., Europe, then take Christmas off, and then go to Asia, into America and then we'll roll out to the festivals," he told Billboard.

"When you get on a roll it's such a laugh. For Meltdown last year we ended up doing about 40 shows all around eastern and southern Europe, it was really good fun. So I can imagine for this we'll end up doing maybe 150 gigs."

Massive Attack are set to release their fifth studio album later this year.

Wal-Mart bans Green Day's '21st Century Breakdown'

Green Day has the most popular CD in the country, but you won't be able to find it at your local Wal-Mart.

The band says the giant superstore chain refused to stock its latest CD, "21st Century Breakdown," because Wal-Mart wanted the album edited for language and content, and they refused.

"Wal-Mart's become the biggest retail outlet in the country, but they won't carry our record because they wanted us to censor it," frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said in a recent interview.

While Wal-Mart sells CDs from acts known for raunchy content, including Eminem's latest, they offer customers the "clean" version of those CDs, which are edited for content that may be objectionable. But in Armstrong's view, "There's nothing dirty about our record."

"They want artists to censor their records in order to be carried in there," he said. "We just said no. We've never done it before. You feel like you're in 1953 or something."

"21st Century Breakdown" contains curses and some references considered adult.

Wal-Mart said that it's the company's long-standing policy not to stock any CD with a parental advisory sticker.

"As with all music, it is up to the artist or label to decide if they want to market different variations of an album to sell, including a version that would remove a PA rating," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien said. "The label and artist in this case have decided not to do so, so we unfortunately can not offer the CD."

But guitarist Mike Dirnt said: "As the biggest record store in the Americas they should probably have an obligation to sell people the correct art."

Not being sold at Wal-Mart didn't stop the band — which kicks off a U.S. tour summer tour in Seattle on July 3 — from landing at the top of the album charts this week. "21st Century Breakdown" sold about 215,000 copies since it's debut on Friday.

The album is the follow-up to their multiplatinum, Grammy-winning CD "American Idiot," and like that album, deals with weighty topics. While "American Idiot" spoke to the frustration over the presidency of George Bush and the Iraq War, this CD speaks to the loss of innocence and confusion in today's society.

While Armstrong, Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool are still top-sellers without Wal-Mart, Armstrong said the store's policy is disappointing, considering it has become the dominant seller of CDs with the decline of traditional music stores.

"If you think about bands that are struggling or smaller than Green Day ... to think that to get record your out in places like that, but they won't carry it because of the content and you have to censor yourself," he said. "I mean, what does that say to a young kid whose trying to speak his mind making a record for the first time? It's like a game that you have to play. You have to refuse to play it."
