La Roux's self-titled debut album is currently outselling Michael Jackson's 'Number Ones' in the midweek charts.

The electropop duo, made up of singer Elly Jackson and producer Ben Langmaid, are currently on course to top the album countdown, despite a surge in Jackson sales since his death last week.

Meanwhile, La Roux's current chart-topping single 'Bullet Proof' is expected to be forced into second place by Jackson's 1988 hit 'Man In The Mirror', which starts the week with a marginal lead.

Glastonbury tributes to Michael Jackson

Stars including NERD frontman Pharrell Williams, Lily Allen and The Streets singer Mike Skinner have paid tribute to Michael Jackson at Glastonbury.

Allen wore a single white glove for her set on the Pyramid Stage, while The Streets played a cover of Billie Jean. Gabriella Cilmi also remembered the superstar, singing part of Billie Jean. The festival got under way in Somerset on Friday, just hours after news of the King of Pop's death spread through the site.

Record producer and rapper Williams said Jackson and Jones - who produced the Thriller album - "opened the door for human beings to explore a higher level of musical consciousness".

Williams, whose band played the Pyramid Stage, told BBC News, "We were supposed to work together. I remember playing some songs for his manager and his manager was like, 'these songs aren't good enough'. Whenever I saw Michael after that he would always bring it up. He thought it was so funny."

Festival organiser Emily Eavis called him a "truly great artist", adding, "There will be tributes all over the site, all weekend".

Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis added, "You realise what a fantastic legend we've lost, the like of which we can't really replace. As an exponent of song and dance, no-one came close."

A Glastonbury spokesman said there was nothing formal planned to mark Jackson's death, but said: "A lot of the performers will be talking about it during their sets".

BBC Radio 1 presenter Jo Whiley noted a muted mood at Worthy farm on Friday morning.

She said, "Everybody will be celebrating the music of Michael Jackson. You can guarantee tonight there will be loads and loads of Jacko coming out of sound systems here."

Dave McCabe, singer with The Zutons, told the BBC more cover versions were inevitable: "Hopefully, because he's got good songs and it's always a winner."

Tommy Bowen, keyboard player for the band White Lies, who played the Other Stage on Friday, said most of the bands playing the festival "can't help but be touched by what's happened. He's such an influential artist, I think many of the people here have been brought up on Michael Jackson. His music crosses musical boundaries, it's a big shock."

Felix White, from The Maccabees, who are also playing Glastonbury's Other Stage, agreed but claimed Jackson's death left him with mixed feelings.

He told BBC 6 Music, "It's weird because you kind of feel that he seemed so unable to cope with the world that, you don't want to say that's it's a blessing in disguise, but it's hard to know how to feel about it."

Within hours of the confirmation of his death, some stalls began selling T-shirts printed with Jackson-related slogans including "Jacko RIP 1958-2009" and "I was at Glasto when Jacko died".

Many festival-goers learned of the news late last night as stalls scattered around the festival site began playing Jackson tracks.

PATRICK WOLF blasted Californian law Proposition 8 during his show at the Highline Ballroom in New York on Tuesday night (June 23).

The singer, who is currently headlining the Nylon Summer Tour across the US, compared the recent events in America to the UK’s old Section 28, which prevented any reference to homosexuality being discussed in schools’ sex education lessons.

“Who here wants to get married someday?” he asked “Who here wants to get married to someone of the same sex? Now what about everyone out there in heterosexual relationships…how would you feel if you got married and then six months later you were told your marriage was illegal?”

His passionate speech prompted overwhelming cheers in the crowd, and he then launched into the song ‘Battle’.

Wolf wore a series of elaborate outfits over the course of the evening including a black and white Union Jack jumpsuit and a ‘vulture’ jacket with high, wing-like shoulder pads and rubber ‘feathers’.

Also performing last night were Jaguar Love, and Parisian all-girl band Plastiscines who briefly halted their performance to single out a solitary man in the audience who refused to clap along during their cover of Nancy Sinatra's ‘These Boots Were Made For Walking’.

Little Boots has been nominated for this year's Mercury Music Prize

Pop singer Little Boots and indie veterans Doves have been named as the favourites to win this year's Mercury Music Prize.

Little Boots' debut album 'Hands' entered the chart at number five and her first LP has made good on pre-release hype with both she and Doves' fourth album Kingdom of Rust adjudged to be 5-1 odds on to win the prestigious award.

Bat for Lashes' second album Two Suns is third favourite at 6-1 while the still unreleased debut efforts from rising stars La Roux and Florence and the Machine are also well fancied by bookmakers.

Though betting is already underway for the annual award - won last year by Elbow's The Seldom Seen Kid - nominations will not be announced until late July.

Glasvegas' self-titled debut album and Lily Allen's sophomore collection It's Not Me, It's You are both 12-1 on to scoop the award with Friendly Fires, the Bug and the Horrors all 20-1 on.

New efforts by Gallows and Manic Street Preachers offer good odds at 50-1 while Oasis' recent album Dig Out Your Soul is a 100-1 long shot.

Michael Eavis to quit Glastonbury duties in 2011

The boss of the iconic Glastonbury music festival will step down from organising the acclaimed event in 2011.

Michael Eavis, a farmer who launched the notorious bash on his land in 1970, will hand over control to his daughter Emily, who has taken a more prominent role in the event's organisation in recent years.

However, despite promising to pass the main responsibilities over to his offspring and son-in-law, Eavis is adamant he still wants a part in planning the festival - however mundane it may be.

He says, "I still feel I have an important role to play. Even if I go I'll worry about the drains, the rubbish, the recycling. There will be a gradual process of her and Nick taking it over."

Glastonbury Festival, which attracts over 170,000 revellers every June, has been headlined by superstars including Sir Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Oasis, Coldplay, Jay-Z and Amy Winehouse. Eavis, who was named as the second most influential music boss in a recent poll, will preside over this year's festival, which sees Bruce Springsteen take to the main stage.

Blur return to play the college where they first met

Blur played a gig in front of a few hundred fans at the London Goldsmith's College earlier tonight (June 22) – the university where guitarist Graham Coxon and bassist Alex James attended and first met.

The show followed intimate comeback gigs for the reunited band at London’s Rough Trade East store and the East Anglia Railway Museum as the four-piece prepare to headline the Glastonbury Festival on Sunday (June 28).

The band opened their set with their debut single 'She's So High', with frontman Damon Albarn reminiscing about the venue shortly afterwards.

"I remember this place being cavernous," he recalled, "running around when there were bands on. It seems a lot smaller now."

The band played hits including Albarn-fronted 'Parklife', 'Girls And Boys' and 'Popscene' in front of the sweltering crowd – many of who were forced to drink bottled cider or spirits as the beer taps quickly ran dry, such was the demand for booze.

Later in the set Albarn told the crowd how amazed he was that the band were playing again in such intimate venues. "I didn't think we'd do this kind of gig again," he said. "I'm pleased we have, thanks for coming."

After a rapturously-received 'Country House', the singer explained how the show took him back to the younger days of the band. "It's truly what it used to be like," he gushed. He then referenced the dry ice effects, adding: "Except we never used to be able to afford that excessive smoke."

Following 'This Is A Low' Blur returned to the stage for a five-song encore, climaxing with 1995 single 'The Universal'.

Sun will shine at Glastonbury this weekend

Bruce Springsteen will play an extra-long set and the sun will shine at the world's biggest green field arts and music festival this year, Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis said.

Old favourites will dominate Glastonbury this year as Neil Young, Tom Jones, Status Quo and Blur join Springsteen on the main stage, marking a return to the festival's guitar-based roots after rap superstar Jay-Z headlined last year.

This year, hip-hop artists like Q-Tip, Roots Manuva and Black Eyed Peas are mostly relegated to smaller areas on the southern English farmland that Eavis has been opening up for Glastonbury since 1970, when the one pound entry fee included free milk from the farm.

Springsteen is so keen to perform this year he has asked for more than his allotted time on the main "Pyramid" stage.

"He wants to play for three hours actually, so we can give him two and a half by the sound of it or maybe two (hours) forty-five," Eavis told Reuters as his cows were herded indoors and he prepared for the invasion of some 200,000 revellers.

Other artists likely to appeal to a younger crowd include indie pop group The Wombats, Australia's Gabriella Cilmi, electro-pop musician Little Boots, and pop artist Lady Gaga.

Pete Doherty will play on Glastonbury's second-largest stage and The Prodigy, best-known for their violent lyrics and hard beats, will be performing "Invaders Must Die," their first album since 2004.

WEATHER

Eavis, who this year made it into TIME magazine's annual list of "the world's 100 most influential people," is confident that the weather will be good this year, but says there are enough marquees to cover everyone if the rain pours and the entire farm becomes a sludgy mud bath as in previous years.

The official weather forecast showed it could be a scorcher.

"It looks like actually getting quite warm and sunny," George Goodfellow, a forecaster at the Met Office, said on Friday, adding temperatures would be around 25-30 degrees Celsius.

Not just about music, the June 24-28 festival, which has 3,225 toilets and consumes over one million gallons of water, also has performing arts, theatre, dance, spiritual-healing and circus events.

Highlights will include the silent disco, where clubbers dance to music on headphones while watching a 3D show through special glasses, "Cult Bingo," "frilly-knickered knife throwers," and "the world's strongest lady."

Those wishing something calmer can enrol in The Free University of Glastonbury and discuss nature, music, non-conformism and even maths. Eternal hippies can head to Stone Circle, where people have been known to dance naked and play drums.

Always trying to find the right balance between security and freedom, an enormous fence surrounds the 1,100 acres of the festival to stop thefts from tents and control numbers.

Undercover surveillance personnel, some ex-military, patrol the site and hand over any dealers of hard drugs they find to police. Marijuana smokers are unofficially left to their own devices.

Eavis said there were only about 130 drug arrests last year and that it was not a big issue.

"Drugs were a problem through the 80s at Glastonbury, but I mean, we're 25 years on from that now so we've all moved on away from that culture really," he said.

Michael Eavis was clear that he was still the boss but said he was gradually giving more control of the festival organisation to his 29-year-old daughter Emily.

"We'll see how she gets on with it and see if she enjoys it and if she wants all the responsibility that it involves, because it is quite considerable," adding that he has a special bond with Emily that began early on.

"The only way I could get her to sleep as a baby was by laying her on my belly," he said.

Blonde Jess says,“This woman drives behind our bus all the time as she’s obsessed with our drummer and wants to talk to him after every show.” And she’s not the only one who has been driven wild by their act.

Jess added, “We also have a girl who flies out to every show in LA from Australia. Our Aussie fans make T-shirts whereas the Americans have Veronicas tattoos. It goes from one extreme to the other.”

The 24-year-old Brisbane babes are still riding high in the Top 10 with single Untouched.

They are in such demand over here that they have put back the release of their album Hook Me Up until September 21 so they can tour the UK.

Jess revealed, “We played a venue recently which turned out to be a Christian community centre. We were told not to wear anything that’s going to show too much flesh so Lisa walked in wearing a vest showing her bra. Our support band The Love Willows had naked mannequins painted in different colours on stage and 30 people demanded a refund on seeing them. We are used to causing a stir without really trying.”

Pet Shop Boys cover Coldplay in London concert

Pet Shop Boys played a hit-packed set in London last night (June 19) that saw them cover Coldplay.

The veteran pop duo continued their high rolling year that saw them honoured at the Brit Awards by selling out the 02 Arena.

Their lavish set was heavy on tracks from their new Xenomania-produced collection 'Yes', but featured hits dating back to their debut single 'West End Girls'.

The band had a surprise up their sleeves towards the encore.'Domino Dancing' morphed into a club mix, with Neil Tennant leaving the stage then returning wearing a crown and cloak, with the duo playing a disco version of Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida'.

It was not the first time the duo have subverted a mainstream rock standard, having covered U2's 'Where The Streets Have No Name' in 1991.

The high-tech production featured a wall of blocks and boxes, inspired by the sleeve design of 'Yes'. For much of the show, the band's troupe of dancers were wearing boxes over their heads and at one point were dressed up as buildings from the New York skyline.

For the encore Tennant and Chris Lowe returned to the stage with plant pots for hands.

Pet Shop Boys played:

'Heart'
'Did You See Me Coming?'
'Pandemonium'/'Can You Forgive Her?'
'Love Comes Quickly'
'Love, Etc'
'Building A Wall'
'Go West'
'Two Divided By Zero'
'Why Don’t We Live Together?'
'Always On My Mind'
'Closer To Heaven'
'King’s Cross'
'The Way It Used To Be'
'Jealousy'
'Suburbia'
'All Over The World'
'Se A Vida E'
'Discoteca’/‘Domino Dancing'
'Viva La Vida'
'It's A Sin'
'Being Boring'
'West End Girls'
