Steven Tyler would return to American Idol

Aerosmith star Steven Tyler has confirmed that he would be interested in returning to American Idol - but not as a judge.

The singer cast a critical eye on contestants for two years but ended up leaving in July this year.

His departure was part of a wide shake-up of personnel on the show, with Jennifer Lopez also quitting the show.

Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban have all been tapped up to judge the show as filming starts once more, and Tyler said that he would be interested in returning to the reality series as a mentor. He said:

"I wouldn't go back and be a judge, but I'd be a mentor. I loved the fact that you go through 700 people, and out of that, you really can pick someone that has talent, because they have to audition anyway."

Tyler continued: "And I'm just grateful that Jennifer [Lopez] and I and Randy [Jackson] could pick people that wound up being so good."
