Alicia Keys opens up: 'I was always afraid of being too vulnerable'

Songstress Alicia Keys has revealed that she is no longer afraid of appearing vulnerable.

She told Heat magazine that she spent years worrying about what people would think of her if she really opened up, but has now arrived at a point where she feels completely confident in herself:

"What I write about is definitely what I feel, what I see, or what I'm going through. I don't mean to imply that I (wasn't real before) - I just feel so much more comfortable now."

Keys added: "I was always afraid of being too vulnerable. I was too strong, too tough, or too cool to (say), 'Feel whatever it is you feel.' You (are allowed to) be a little down or confused. That is what I've found more comforting."

"I hated that I was always trying to find the most perfectly, politically correct way that wouldn't hurt anyone's feelings at all. Who can live like that?"

Back in May, Keys wrote an empowering post for the Lenny newsletter and confessed that she is tired of trying to live up to the unrealistic beauty standards placed upon women: "I don't want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing."
