Singer and actress Ariana Grande will star as Penny in the upcoming NBC production of 'Hairspray! Live' and is "a total team player" according to her superiors on set. 

The production's writer Harvey Fierstein told Page Six that he's incredibly impressed by the energy and effort she is putting into her role and is proud to have her on board:

"Ariana is here working her tail off. She is a total team player. She is old school, singing and dancing. Her only concern is being part of the Hairspray team. If that’s diva, then give me more of that!”

The "Into You" star told reporters at the recent Television Critics Association press tour that theatre means more to her than music so she was honoured to have been chosen: 

"I don’t want to change anything about the role or how she develops. I just love Penny and it’s such a great honour to play her. I don’t want any special icing or parts. This is such a dream come true for me because at heart, theatre is everything to me. Pop music is so fun, but this is way much more fun. So much more.”
