Calvin Harris joins line-up for Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2014


Calvin Harris set to play on Saturday 24 May alongside One Direction, Bastille, Pharrell, Jake Bugg, Lily Allen, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay

BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Nick Grimshaw this morning revealed that Calvin Harris has joined the incredible line-up for Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2014, taking place at Glasgow Green on 24 and 25 May.

The Scottish DJ and producer will play on the main stage on Saturday 24 May ahead of Coldplay, who headline the Saturday night. US pop star Katy Perry will headline the final night of the two-day event.

Over 50 artists and bands will join Calvin Harris to perform at Europe’s largest free music festival, performing across the event’s three stages - the Main Stage, In New Music Stage and a BBC Introducing Stage which will showcase talented unsigned and undiscovered artists.

Calvin Harris, says: “I would feel really left out to not be there, so I’m WELL excited!”

Joining Calvin Harris and headliners, Coldplay, to perform on the Main Stage on Saturday 24 May are One Direction, Bastille, Pharrell, Jake Bugg, Lily Allen and Ed Sheeran.

Kings Of Leon, The Vamps, John Newman, Rita Ora, The 1975, Tinie Tempah and Paolo Nutini will all perform on the Main Stage on Sunday 25 May, ahead of Katy Perry’s headline performance.

The In New Music We Trust Stage on Saturday 24 May is headlined by Example with Clean Bandit, Lorde, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Kooks, Katy B, Twin Atlantic and Wilkinson also on the bill.

On Sunday 25 May, Sub Focus, You Me at Six, London Grammar, Klaxons, Sam Smith, Gorgon City and CHVRCHES will all perform ahead of the headliners, Kasabian.

BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra in Glasgow

From Saturday 10 May to Friday 16 May 2014, Radio 1 and BBC Learning will open the doors to Radio 1’s Academy, embarking on a special week of local engagement and outreach activity in Glasgow. On Saturday 17 May, Radio 1Xtra will host a one-night special event showcasing the best urban music at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow the week before Radio 1’s Big Weekend. The line-up includes MistaJam, Charlie Sloth and DJ Target from the 1Xtra family with DJ Fresh, Duke Dumont and Breach joining them for the event.

Radio 1 will kick-start the celebrations on Friday 23 May with Radio 1’s Big Weekend Live from George Square. The event will see Radio 1 DJs Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and Danny Howard joined by Tiësto and Martin Garrix to host a massive party for over 14,000 music fans.

Radio 1’s Big Weekend will be visiting Glasgow to celebrate the city’s hosting of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and will be produced in partnership with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau.

The event is part of the BBC’s year-long contribution to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The BBC is the domestic broadcaster for Glasgow 2014 and, in addition to comprehensive sports coverage during the Games in July and August, the Corporation has also unveiled a wide-ranging package of on-air and off-air output and events throughout 2014.

Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2014 will be broadcast live on Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra and streamed online and on mobile. It will also be broadcast on BBC Three with highlights from acts across the weekend.
