Bastille's Dan says performing live is like Russian roulette

"Good Grief" hitmakers Bastille are no strangers to playing in front of thousands of people these days, but frontman Dan Smith still suffers from the odd bout of nerves before stepping out on stage.

Speaking to Britain's The Guardian newspaper, Smith explained that during his band's recent performance at Sziget festival in Hungary he felt unable to enjoy the moment and experienced a feeling of detachment from what he was doing:

“I just wasn’t able to enjoy it. t was almost an out-of-body experience: ‘This feels like a proper band at a proper festival. I wish I was enjoying it a bit more.’ I’m aware that I sound like a complete nervous wreck who hates it, but I enjoy a lot of it.”

He went onto explain that his only way of overcoming nerves when the band first started out was to "hide behind" his piano while on stage: “It was a great crutch. I could look down and not have to face the crowd. I feel like it’s almost Russian roulette, going out on stage. I can’t predict if it’s going to be one I enjoy.”
