Bastille's Dan Smith once had his drink spiked at the BRITs

Bastille frontman Dan Smith has revealed that he once had his drink spiked at the BRIT Awards, which makes for a bizarre first memory of the annual event.

He told press at the recent NME Awards: "Our record label had one spare ticket and I was told to go. I was by myself, I didn’t know anyone and was totally new to the industry. I had to get changed into my new suit in the toilets. I thought I’d be on my best behaviour because I had to be up the next day to catch a Eurostar train at 5am so I was going to stay sober."

He added: “But someone spiked my drink. It was with something recreational — I was very friendly with people — way more friendly than normal. So that’s my memory of the BRITs.”

The band were present at last night's BRIT Awards and Smith told the BBC that he tried to chat to Katy Perry, but it was an awkward interaction: "Having to have a conversation with her, I was really awkward and everyone was shouting 'Dan' so I tried to make an Alan Partridge joke and I think it went a little bit over her head."
