Carly Rae Jepsen: 'There's a stigma attached to being a pop artist'

Canadian sensation Carly Rae Jepsen has revealed that it's hard to be taken seriously as an artist when you're known for your work within the pop music world.

During a new interview with The New York Times, the songstress explained that she knows how difficult it can be for artists to break out of the 'pop' box especially if they've had huge success with one single in particular, like she did with 'Call Me Maybe':

"I’m aware that I am defined by ‘Call Me Maybe’ to other people. Part of why I took so long with this album was seriously taking time to change my thinking, so it wasn’t about proving anything. There’s a stigma attached to being a pop artist that you don’t write or you’re in the room and get credit but you didn’t do anything."

She went onto praise her manager, Scooter Braun, and joked that he once sent her a track that she had actually written herself:

“I have to give kudos to Scooter, because he’s got a lot of different artists on his roster” and unlike many of them “I write my songs. To my delight, one day he accidentally sent my own song to me — he said, ‘I think this would really suit you'. He didn’t know I’d written it. I was like: ‘Scoots, I wrote “Call Me Maybe”! That’s why you signed me.’”
