Film4's I Am Not A Witch invited to screen at Directors' Fortnight

The debut feature from Welsh-Zambian filmmaker Rungano Nyoni will screen at Directors’ Fortnight, joining other Film4 titles The Killin of A Sacred Deer (from director Yorgos Lanthimos), You Were Never Really Here (Lynne Ramsay), and How To Talk To Girls At Parties (John Cameron Mitchell), which were all announced as part of the festival’s Official Selection last week.

After a minor incident in her village, 9-year-old Shula is exiled to a travelling witch camp where she is told that if she tries to escape she will be transformed into a goat. As she navigates through her new life, she must decide whether to accept her fate or risk the consequences of seeking freedom.

Rungano Nyoni was born in Zambia and raised in Wales. She graduated from Central St Martins with an MA Acting. She has made a number of shorts including BAFTA Cymru winner The List and BAFTA nominee Mwansa The Great, and wrote the Locarno Golden Leopard winner The Mass of Men. She was selected for the Nordic Factory where she co-directed the short Listen which premiered in Directors Fortnight and qualified for an Oscar®. In 2013, Nyoni participated in the Cannes Cinéfondation Residence programme.

Directors’ Fortnight is an independent section held in parallel to the Cannes Film Festival. The 49th edition of Directors’ Fortnight will run May 18-28, 2017.
