Demi Lovato: 'Substance abuse started when I was just 12 years old'

'Neon Lights' beauty Demi Lovato has revealed that her personal struggles, which saw her enter rehab back in 2010, began when she was very young and have taken a long time to face and conquer.

She explained to Britain's You magazine that she got into a car accident when she was just 12-years-old and found herself sneaking extra prescription painkillers out of her mother's purse when she wasn't looking, which kicked off her substance abuse problem:

"That was how the substance abuse started. I liked the feeling they gave me - they sort of numbed everything - and I also liked the sneakiness of taking extra pills out of my mom's bag without her knowing."

She went onto add that her habits spiralled out of control so much that she began sneaking cocaine onto planes so that she could snort lines in the bathroom: "I would smuggle it on and just wait until everyone in first class was asleep and then I would sneak to the bathroom."

Lovato, meanwhile, recently confirmed a one-off concert at Los Angeles' famed Staples Center arena and confessed that she is planning some exciting surprises for the show: "I’m going to start rehearsals very soon. I’m still putting together surprises and things like that, so I’m not entirely sure what’s going to happen."
