Ed Sheeran on Madison Square Garden dates: 'I had to prove a point'

Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has revealed that performing at New York's Madison Square Garden was a career defining moment because it showed how far he has come as an artist.

Sheeran told Billboard magazine, in behind-the-scenes footage from his recent interview and photo shoot with the publication, that he committed to the Madison Square Garden dates to prove a point and to show that he wasn't only going to be a support act when playing live sets in the USA:

"My reasoning for doing it was that I wanted to prove a point. I didn’t want to finish my American success as an opening act... and now it’s just like ‘Oh yeah you did three MSGs... It proved a point."

The 'Sing' superstar added to Billboard that he believed people doubted his ability to sell out a venue as iconic as MSG, which made him even more determined to prove them wrong:

"That's why I made them hold three [dates]. I know my fan base and I can tell when something is going well. And record sales didn't mirror ticket sales. People were very doubtful that I could sell out one Madison Square Garden [gig], but my reasoning for doing it was I wanted to prove a point."
