Ed Sheeran on why he stays away from Mobo Awards

Ed Sheeran says he tends to avoid attending the Mobo Awards because there are people "more deserving" in the field than him.

The singer has been nominated for a number of awards at the event since 2012, including Best Male Act and Best Album.

The singer-songwriter told the Breakfast Club that he didn't attend the ceremonies because he didn't "deserve" to win awards at an event called Music of Black Origin.

When asked for his thoughts on people saying that acts like him and Sam Smith are "stealing black people's sound", Sheeran said:

"I think we’re embracing it. Its something that should be celebrated. I never don’t give credit where it’s due. I’m very open of who influences me, what albums I’m listening to, I take people on tour. I don’t think it’s necessarily a theft thing, I think it’s a celebration of music. I think if you do it correctly and respectfully no one can really knock you."

He was then asked if it is hypocritical when black singers say "you shouldn't do this kind of music because you're white", with the 'Lego House' man replying:

"I’ve never heard anyone say that to me. I got nominated for a Music of Black Origin (MOBO) award in England – three times in a row and didn’t turn up for that very reason, because I feel like it should go to someone a bit more deserving than me."
