Ed Sheeran honoured at Wembley with first ever Official No.1 album award for 'X'

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has secured the No.1 spot on the Official UK Albums Chart with his latest record 'x'.

The superstar is set to perform a series of three concerts at London's iconic Wembley Stadium starting this evening (July 10) and this amazing achievement has now been made even better by the fact that he has now been awarded the first ever Official Number 1 Album Award; which is a companion to the successful Official Number 1 Award for singles.

The gold-plated trophy is launched to coincide with the inaugural Friday chart and the beginning of the 60th anniversary year of the Official Albums Chart. Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, Sheeran said: “This is cool, I’m happy with this! Being Number 1 again after the album has been out for a year is pretty mad, I didn’t expect it! Everyone was saying they hoped it would happen around the Wembley shows, but I didn’t think it would.”

“England is the only place I get awards. I go to a lot of awards shows and end up not really picking up anything up, so every time I get one, I treasure it. I don’t do this for the awards, but I do like having a mantelpiece full of stuff like this.”

Last week’s chart-topper, Lionel Richie & The Commodores’ 'The Definitive Collection', is at 3, James Bay’s 'Chaos and the Calm' slips a place to No.4 and Taylor Swift’s '1989' completes the Top 5.
