Ed Sheeran's 'Thinking Out Loud' reaches 500m streams on Spotify

Ed Sheeran has made a new Spotify record.

His 2014 song 'Thinking Out Loud' has become the first track to break the 500 million streams mark.

The tune features on his second album 'x', which was previously named as the most popular record on Spotify last year.

Sheeran commented: "Chuffed to hear that 'Thinking Out Loud' has had half a billion plays on Spotify.

"Being the first artist to hit that milestone is amazing. Thanks to all the people who use this as a wedding song, soundtrack to a date, and as a way to woo someone into a Netflix-and-chill situation."

The Brit's music can be heard in one in four playlists on Spotify.

Nineteen million people stream his music monthly - but he is placed behind The Weeknd and Calvin Harris in the race to be Spotify's most popular artist at the moment.

Sheeran's 'x' followed-up his 2011 debut album '+', which featured tracks like 'Lego House' and 'The A Team'.
