Ed Sheeran quits social media: 'If you love me, you'll understand'

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has announced that he will be taking a break from social media "for a while" now that his touring commitments have finally come to an end.

The superstar has 16 million Twitter followers, 5.5 million followers on Instagram, and 13.8 million likes on Facebook, but has decided to turn his back on the digital world in order to gain some real life experience as he takes a break.

He shared a post to Instagram this morning explaining his decision, which reads: "I'm taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while. I've had such an amazing ride over the last 5 years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I'm taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I've missed."

Sheeran added: "To my family and friends, if you love me you'll understand me buggering off for a bit, to my fans, the 3rd album is on its way and is the best thing I've made thus far. See you all next autumn."
