Ellie Goulding on course for first ever UK No.1 single

Singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding has shot straight to the top of the UK Top 40 during today's (August 14) midweek chart update with her new single, 'Burn'.

The Official Charts Company has confirmed that Goulding is currently outselling her closest competitor, which is Avicii with 'Wake Me Up' at No.2, by 2 copies to 1. Miley Cyrus has dropped to No.3 with 'We Can't Stop', The Wanted have debuted at 6 with their new offering 'We Own The Night', and Arctic Monkeys' 'Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?' has made an appearance at No.5.

Interestingly, Lady Gaga's comeback single 'Applause' has entered the singles chart at No.11 after being on sale for only seven hours. Up to midnight last night, it had sold an impressive 10,500 copies.

OneRepublic's 'Counting Stars' is at No.40, Eliza Doolittle's 'Big When I Was Little' has fallen 18 positions to sit at No.36, and The Vaccines have entered at No.34 with 'Melody Calling'.
