Ellie Goulding: ‘I changed my accent because I thought I sounded poor’

'Burn' songstress Ellie Goulding has confessed that when she first began to attract attention with her music she actively altered her accent to sound more well spoken.

Speaking to Britain's The Guardian about initially being somewhat ashamed at having a Hereford accent, the hitmaker explained that she removed all traces of it in order for people to look at her differently and without social judgment:

"I became fixated on speaking well. I felt like people just knew I was from a council house and that I was poor because of the way I spoke. I feel silly because I'm not ashamed of the Hereford accent now and it's too late to get it back."

Goulding, meanwhile, will head out on a UK arena tour next spring and the short run of dates will kick off on March 5 in Nottingham at the Capital FM Arena. She is set to end the tour with a headlining performance at the O2 Arena in London on March 9.
