Emeli Sandé opens up on her upbringing

Rising star Emeli Sandé has opened up on her upbringing, describing the problems she had as a mixed race girl growing up in a small village.

Speaking to The Sun, Sandé admitted that her family were the first non-whites in her Aberdeenshire village and that they felt somewhat ostracised as a result.

However, Sandé admits she just "got on with it". She said:

"People would say things that perhaps you shouldn't say - but then again we were the first non-white family in the village. We were obviously very different to everyone else and I was never really going to fit in. But my mum and dad had it worse. They met each other in Sunderland in the Eighties. As an inter-racial couple, they had it hard. They had to really battle just to be together back then, so I just thought I wasn't going to complain. I kind of got on with it because I knew it could have been a lot worse."
