Elly Oh, the musician who defied the industry

After struggling for years with a lack of opportunities in her native South Korea, immigration difficulties and being shunned by the K-pop industry because of her looks, The Voice Australia finalist Elly Oh is traveling to the UK to promote her debut single.

In 2014, Elly Oh was shot into the limelight after wowing The Voice Australia judges within the first 5 seconds of her blind audition. The four celebrity judges were blown away by the unrivalled talent of Elly Oh, with Will.i.am saying the artist “has a big and powerful voice” and Ricky Martin, who would go on to become her mentor, saying that she “is blessed with a beautiful gift.” As one of that series favourite finalists, Elly Oh seemed to have come from nowhere, but her talent has been shaping itself for years.

Elly first discovered her love of singing at the age of 18, while volunteering at her local hospital. It was a nurse who first heard Elly's talent and told her that she had the most amazing voice she had ever heard. It was after this that Elly decided to audition for South Korea’s most famous K-pop management team, but despite her undeniable talent, her dreams were shattered when they advised her that she would need to drastically change her image with cosmetic surgery if she wanted to be successful in the music industry.

It was then that Elly decided to focus her attention on training her operatic voice, studying a Bachelor of Opera at the University of Hanyang in South Korea traveling as far as Italy to complete a Diploma to perfect her craft. In addition to this Elly received a number of awards and accolades, including the McDonalds Opera World Song competition.

After her successes in opera in South Korea, Elly felt it was time to spread her wings further and set her sights on Australia. She was offered a scholarship to study at the Sydney Music Conservatory. However upon arriving in Sydney Elly was dealt a devastating blow when her scholarship offer fell through. Not only did she have nowhere to train but she was also forced to abandon her singing career plans due to restrictions with her visa. Thankfully for her on 12th December 2012 (a date now permanently tattooed on Elly's arm) all that changed as she was granted permanent residency in Australia. It was at this point that her boyfriend sent an application to The Voice Australia which changed Elly's life forever.

After mesmerising Australia for several weeks with some enchanting performances seen by record viewing figures of over 6 million per show, Elly was finally eliminated and went on to perform across Australia at some of the country’s top events, and was even invited to perform for the former Australian Prime Ministers' wife Margaret Abbott who was a huge fan of hers on the show. Elly also had the privilege to perform at numerous events in Papa New Guinea, The Soloman Islands and back in South Korea where she was greeted home to a rapturous welcome.

After 2 years of writing her own original material with a number of producers in which she has bared the pain and the triumphs of her journey so far, Elly Oh has signed with The Famous Company to release her debut single 'Real Men Cry' on 15th April 2016. She is traveling to the UK to promote the single with various performances in London, plus a nationwide radio tour alongside a number of other promotional events.

Elly's hauntingly beautiful debut single 'Real Men Cry' is poised to captivate the hearts of British music fans and she hopes that when she returns to Australia that a piece of her incredible journey will remain here in the UK.
