A 24 year old hip-hop artist from Walsall has been empowering teenagers across the West Midlands as part of a national schools tour.

Rapper and songwriter Kay Kumar has been visiting schools across the region over the past 2 weeks as part of a drug education tour. The key message of the tour supports programs developed by charity D.A.R.E. which encourages young people to make healthy lifestyle choices. So far this month Kay has performed to over 2500 young people across seven schools, with a further 13 schools already confirmed for the Autumn term.

As a multi-instrumentalist Kay has been developing himself as an artist since he studied GCSE music at Shireland Collegiate Academy in Smethwick. Unlike many of his peers Kay always saw music as more of a career than a hobby and worked through his late teens to develop a unique style as a rapper which was different to the rest of the UK industry. Taking inspirations from the everyday challenges he faced growing up, Kay has spent the last 10 years perfecting his carefully crafted vocals which have already been described by blog site Music Crowns as "the rebirth of intellectual rap".

Having previously worked with producers including Zak la Ninja and WXDM, Kay's music is ever evolving. Since signing to The Famous Company in March this year Kay has performed at a number of events including PopRevue at Freedom in London, which has previously played host to Adele and Sam Smith before their rise to fame, plus opening for West Midlands based artist Beth Sherburn on her first headline tour which came in the wake of her supporting The Saturday's on their greatest hits tour. Later this summer, Kay is participating in a songwriting competition which includes a performance at the NEC.
