Kevin Basham: Self-Made Man Turned Business Guru

In the UK, we’re starting to live in a time of inclusion for all; where everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, race or sexuality can thrive. But for those old enough to remember, it hasn't always been the case.

For 34-year old entrepreneur and business coach, Kevin Basham, the path to success has been far from smooth. Growing up in Hitchin in rural Hertfordshire, Kevin had very little confidence throughout adolescence. He felt different from his peers and didn't know how his life was going to pan out. Like many young gay men, Kevin felt like he didn't fit in at school. He had few friends and constant bullying meant that he didn't enjoy his teenage years.

When Kevin finally came to terms with his sexuality and came out to his friends and family, he was able to feel acceptance and start creating bold plans for the future. After selling mats door to door, he soon learned that his flair for sales could lead him to make a lot of money. Setting up his business with no investment, Kevin co-founded Plastic Expert, a multi-site business which now boasts a seven figure turnover, alongside holding a reputation as one of the UK's leading plastic recycling companies.

"I wanted a business that would benefit people, and the environment as both these areas are really important to me. Perhaps wearing a hard hat, rigger boots and a high viz jacket isn't exactly what my peers at school would have thought I'd end up doing, but there shouldn't be stereotypes in any workplace. Still, the recycling world seems to be dominated by straight men. When some of our clients found out I was gay, they were shocked, but I feel that my natural ability to read a situation ensured that this insight into my personal life only strengthened our working relationships"

Kevin's motivation in growing his businesses has always been that "the greatest achievement in life is overcoming adversity". From the challenge of accepting who he was as a teenager, to opening his first business with no investment, Kevin's experience and knowledge provides proof of what's possible.

So, inspired by his success, Kevin is now launching resources to give young people confidence to be their true selves. This includes his blog, online videos and soon to launch podcast. "I don't want to be a motivational speaker. I want to be an example of what's possible", said Kevin.

“I’m fascinated by people who have overcome insecurities, discrimination and hardship to achieve something wonderful in their lives. I want to tell my story and the story of others to show the world what’s possible”

“When you own who you are, even your imperfections; life becomes easier and, consequently, more successful”
