Frank Turner Q&A: 'I want to keep changing and evolving'

It's fair to say Frank Turner's journey through the music industry has been a particularly interesting one.

He started off as the vocalist for post-hardcore rockers Million Dead before going solo with an acoustic guitar to big success - in 2012, for instance, he performed to the world at the Olympic Games opening ceremony.

Pressparty caught up with Turner for a quick Q&A as he releases his latest record 'Positive Songs for Negative People' to talk about his current sound and musical evolution.

Your upcoming new album is called ‘Positive Songs for Negative People’. Are you a negative - or positive - person?

"A bit of both I suppose. Depends what day of the week you ask me, or maybe even what time of day!"

How would you say the sound differs from your last record?

"I wanted this record to be more raw, more direct, less polished. We recorded this one pretty much live, in 9 days in Nashville."

Is it your best album yet?

"I think so, but it's not really for me to say."

Taking into account your musical roots, does it still feel a bit weird to be playing massive venues and arenas?

"Yes, but then that's something I've been dealing with for a little while now, so I'm getting used to it. Also, feeling weird is not something to be scared of, it's often a good thing. I don't want to be comfortable."

Are there any plans to resume metal side-project Möngöl Hörde?

"Yeah sometime, when I have some free time."

It was a pretty rocky affair. But what other metal bands are floating your boat the moment?

"I'm big into Converge, as always, and Every Time I Die, and HECK (formerly Baby Godzilla)."

And conversely, what mainstream acts are you enjoying right now?

"I don't really categorise music in that way; I'm not entirely sure who is 'mainstream' and who isn't."

You’re only 33, but are you happy with the evolution of your career so far?

"Yes. I'm at a point now, though, where I'm keen to make sure I don't settle down, creatively. I want to keep changing, evolving, pushing forward."

What else do you hope to achieve?

"I want to write better songs, I want to play South America, I want to stay interested and interesting."
