Iggy Azalea confronts racism accusations: "Getting the word racist put on me sucked"

Iggy Azalea has spoken about some of the more contentious issues of her career.

In an interview with The Observer the ‘Work’ rapper addressed attacks on her artistic authenticity and accusations of racism.

On the subject of her place in the rap world Iggy – real name Amethyst Kelly – argued:

“You know the funny thing is I have never had any musicians tell me that I wasn't authentic for being white and Australian. Not one.”

She also stated: “'I love the fact that I don't rap the way I talk. It's cool.”

The Australian rap star went on to discuss the issue of being labelled racist by fellow rapper Azealia Banks early on in her career.

In 2012 Banks attacked Iggy Azalea on Twitter for making the cover of XXL magazine after she had referred to herself as a “slave master” on the track ‘D.R.U.G.S.’

Iggy explained: “Getting the word racist put on me sucked. And it's hurtful for other people to have to hear it [referring to her boyfriend Nick Young]. And it is hurtful for other people's families to have to hear it. I think people seriously need to rethink that word. We are very liberal in flinging it around and it is pretty fucking heavy.”

She also defended Lorde who was criticised for the racist implications of her song ‘Royals’.

Azalea stated: “I didn't know Lorde was a big old racist. Me, I've been called everything but it kind of irks me to think that they said that about a 17-year-old. Don't say that about a kid! You cannot erase those things, they are there forever.”
