The singer-songwriter dated the pop princess for a number of months and they were spotted together publicly at February's Grammy Awards.

However, speculation has arisen over the future of their relationship and speaking to Ellen DeGeneres, Mayer confirmed the news.

When Ellen said that she heard the couple weren't together anymore, he replied: "Correct".

Mayer continued: "Listen, it was a very private relationship going in. It was a private relationship during and it's a private relationship, still."

As previously reported, Mayer admitted in February that he would be interested in marrying Perry.

Speaking to Billboard, the singer explained that after having the operation to remove the granuloma from his throat the rules for recovery were very strict so he had to abide by them:

"I probably had contiguously three, maybe four months of not saying a word. The endurance was tough for me, but I started a new life."

Mayer added that he was forced to rely on electric gadgets in order to communicate and it was a tough experience: "I was forced to type on my iPad to communicate anything. It wasn't liberating. Is breaking your leg liberating? No. All complexity is gone when you don't have a choice."

He has since made a full recovery, but admitted that there's always the concern that the condition will reappear so he now visits a doctor regularly as a precaution: "It's hard to believe that I'm healed, but just to make sure, I keep going back (to the doctor) every two weeks for a look, and it's the same - if not better."

Mayer has now confirmed details of a sprawling 44 date tour that will take him across North and South America this summer.

The pair are currently dating following Perry's divorce from former husband Russell Brand in 2012.

Speaking to CBS, the singer suggested that he would like to enter into wedlock with Perry in the future. When asked if marriage could be on the cards, he said:

"Of course. I mean, I'm still the kid from Connecticut. That's what you do."

Mayer also revealed that his relationship with the 'Wide Awake' star doesn't feel like a "celebrity" pairing and seems more "human". He said:

"For the first time in my life I don't feel like I'm in a celebrity relationship. I know it is high profile. It's hard to explain...For me it feels like something that's very human."

Mayer and Perry meanwhile attended the Grammy Awards last night (February 10) in Los Angeles, with the 'Teenage Dream' star looking resplendent in a revealing dress.

Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine about Ocean's talent and personality, the 'Clarity' star confessed that his friend is very 'deep' and he hopes he can find another person on his level to be with"

"I love Frank's stuff. Frank is such an interesting, deep, touched, wonderful guy. They don't make a lot of other Frank Oceans, and the guy is looking for another."

"And the way that his mind works is craving the same frequency that he's able to communicate on, and I think he's just searching for that kind of depth that he has inside of himself in someone else. He's fascinating to me. He's so great."

Ocean made headlines earlier this week after it was revealed that he got involved in a fight with Chris Brown, in which he was called a "f**got" by the 'Don't Wake Me Up' sensation.

The 'Clarity' sensation has only done one public performance, which was at a benefit for firemen in Bozeman, Montana, since the two operations he had on his vocal cords last year (2012) and explained to Rolling Stone magazine that it's like beginning all over again:

"Everything changed about my voice. I don't have the projection. My laugh changed. The way I used to laugh is kind of like that ‘I'm embarrassed,’ high-pitched laugh. I don't really laugh that way anymore. I've found new ways around everything – new ways to talk, new ways to laugh. Now I wonder if I can go right back to the shape of my voice that I had when I was singing once I can do what I want to do with it."

In the same interview, he opened up about his relationship with Katy Perry and while he was wary of making specific remarks, he did confess: "It's been...I mean, I'm quite happy. I'm happy in all aspects of my life. I'm very happy in all aspects of my life."

Mayer has been constantly linked with the singer for a number of months, with a host of photos emerging of the couple out in public together.

He was quizzed by Rolling Stone on the rumoured partnership, to which he replied:

"It's been...I mean, I'm quite happy. I'm happy in all aspects of my life. I'm very happy in all aspects of my life."

Talking about his private life after being seen with Perry, Mayer responded:

"It makes it hard to live a life where people don't know who you are, but I haven't had any trouble in my private life at all. The only trouble I've had is maybe people geo-tagging me, but that's about it. To me it's just a matter of people knowing where you are on a given day, and I guess assessing your style when there is no style to be assessed. I don't really call that infringing on a personal life. That's just where I am, when. That's all."

Swift's hit 'Dear John', which includes lyrics such as "Dear John, I see it all. Now it was wrong, don't you think 19 is too young to be played by your dark twisted games, when I loved you so?", is reportedly about her short-lived romance with the superstar and he told Rolling Stone magazine that it humiliated him:

"It made me feel terrible. Because I didn't deserve it. I'm pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do."

"I never got an e-mail. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you've ever been, someone kicked you even lower?"

Mayer also explained that from a songwriting perspective, he doesn't like the track at all: "I will say as a songwriter that I think it's kind of cheap songwriting."

"I know she's the biggest thing in the world, and I'm not trying to sink anybody's ship, but I think it's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait till he gets a load of this!' That's bullshit."

The 'Gravity' sensation, who was forced to pull out of his full north American tour back in March after a granuloma had grown back from where it had previously been removed, has shot to the top of the U.S. albums chart with 'Born and Raised'. 

The record sold over 219,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan.

He posted a message to his fans via his official Tumblr page on May 25 and thanked them for supporting the record because he has been unable to promote it with live shows, and explained that the projected sales figures were "incredible on all your parts because there has been very little I've been able to do to promote it."

He also opened up recently about the controversial interviews he gave back in 2010 and told Guy Raz's radio show 'All Things Considered':

"I wasn't prepared to be honest, but I knew that I had to be open. When you're just open but not honest, then you start free-associating garbage. It doesn't mean I can go back and scrub it out, but I understand it [now]."

The singer songwriter gave interviews that year and spoke openly about past relationships, such as with Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson.

Speaking to Guy Raz radio show All Things Considered, Mayer said that he was at a period in his life where he didn't want to speak about his personal life but that he felt compelled to be open - perhaps encouraging him to embellish the truth a little. He said:

"I had nothing to say - I was going through a time in my life where I didn't really want to share what was going on, but I didn't want to be boring. I remember thinking to myself, 'We gotta give a Rolling Stone interview? I don't want anybody at Playboy to think this is a boring interview.' I got those lines so crossed, that what you read - among other things, obviously - is this complete miscalculation in why I was asked to do the interview."

Back in 2010, Mayer frequently made headlines by giving reporters revealing quotes and candid details of his relationships with Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson. Earlier this week, two years later, he sat down with Ellen DeGeneres and spoke about his need to shy away from the press for a while:

"For a couple of years, it was just figuring it all out, and I'm glad I actually stayed out of the spotlight. Because I think back then I would've said, 'Give me two weeks or let me get out and do Ellen and let me explain myself.'

"It was like, 'No, idiot. Go away and be 33 and 34 instead of 28 for the fourth year. The plan that originally gets you out of high school and your hometown, in front of people... that plan was over. I had done it. I just sort of lost my head for a little while." 

He also talked about the returning granuloma on his vocal cords that forced him to cancel his entire U.S. tour recently, adding:

"They cut this thing out of your throat and then they inject your vocal cords with Botox, which freezes your vocal cords so that this thing can heal without smacking up against the other side. I just need more Botox next time."

The vocal sensation revealed to his fans back in March that a recurring and serious throat condition forced him to scrap his entire US tour and added that he now has "no choice but to take an indefinite break from live performing".

Today (April 27) Mayer shared the video for 'Shadow Days', which will act as the lead single from his new album 'Born And Raised', and it shows him travelling across the Western frontier while singing the lyrics and playing his guitar.

Mayer also took to his official Facebook page earlier today and told his fans that they can unlock "exclusive photos taken by John and director Philip Andelman from the "Shadow Days" road trip" by clicking and sharing a certain link.

The 'Slow Dancing In A Burning Room' sensation was recently forced to scrap his entire scheduled tour after discovering that a pre-existing condition that affected his voice had returned, but will be recognised at the ceremony in April for his "commitment to improving the working environment for the nation's music community".

Neil Portnow, the Recording Academy President/CEO, explained in an official statement that the seven-time GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter/producer will be rewarded for "being an enormous talent" and for his work as "an active philanthropist in arts and education". 

The GRAMMYs On The Hill event will take place on April 25 at the Liaison Capitol Hill hotel. 

The 'Gravity' superstar was set to hit the road on April 9, but posted a troubling message on his Tumblr account earlier today (March 9) that explained he simply can't go ahead with the string of shows as planned: "I have no choice but to take an indefinite break from live performing."

In October last year, Mayer was ordered to stop performing live in order to recover from battling granuloma and the blog post from this afternoon explains that the condition has now returned: 

"I went in for a visit (to the hospital) on Wednesday and a scope of my vocal cords revealed that the granuloma has grown back where it had mostly healed. This is bad news." 

His previously delayed fifth studio album, 'Born And Raised', will still be released on May 22, but he will no longer tour in support of the record.

The 'Slow Dancing In A Burning Room' superstar explained to fans that he was forced to undergo an operation to remove a granuloma from just above his vocal chord, and wrote a message on his personal blog that explained he now needs to take time out to recover:

"It's been a very long process in waiting to see if time was an alternative to surgery, but even given two weeks' voice rest (along with many other approaches), there was no change for the better."

"I should be frustrated but I can't seem to stop thinking about beautiful things... I never thought I'd be wishing I could do what I love again; I stay in at night, picking guitar parts off of records and dreaming of playing on the big stage."

The only difference between now and when I was 18 is that now I have this beautiful, meaningful record waiting for me when I can sing it. Until then, I'm taking off. Going to travel the country, look and listen," he added.
