5 times Little Mix spoke their mind and inspired us all

Hitmakers Little Mix have come a long way since winning 'The X Factor' back in 2011 and they are now confident young women who stand up for what they believe in and use their platform to talk about things that matter.

We have rounded up some of our favourite quotes from the girls on topics such as gender equality, female empowerment, and on not being afraid to step outside of their comfort zone.

1. On showcasing their sensuality through music and dance:

In the summer of 2014, Perrie Edwards told the press that they prefer to show off their sensual side in a mature way: "We don't want to gyrate on the floor with no clothes on, but we do want to look sexy. We're 20-odd years old, so we want to look nice and pretty and cool, but we do it in a way that's more mature."

Leigh-Anne Pinnock added that there's a strong sense of power in the way they choose to embrace and represent their sexuality, and they're proud of how they do this: "Our style of dancing is more strong and powerful than sexy. Salute is very powerful."

2. On feeling confident enough to embrace natural beauty and refusing to conform to ridiculous standards:

During a chat with We Love Pop, the 'Black Magic' girls admitted that they would never wear make-up to the gym because not only is it bad for your skin, but it's also indicative of the pressure women are under to appear perfect all the time and they don't think it's fair:

“When you wear make-up in the gym you're sweaty and then you get really bad skin. You're better off just taking it off - letting yourself sweat and then putting it on nicely rather than getting it on your pores.”

Jesy Nelson added that she enjoys wearing make-up and likes to use it to "get into character", but doesn't rely on it all the time and is happy without it:

“When we do dance rehearsals I have to have make-up on. I like to get into character, like Beyoncé and Sasha Fierce [Beyoné’s onstage alter ego], and I can't do it if I don't have make-up on or I'll feel rank. But if it's just the gym, then definitely not.”

3. On accepting that people will look up to them as role models:

Being famous often means that people will look to you as a point of inspiration and Little Mix confessed to EntertainmentWise that while they "didn't ask to be role models", it's rewarding to know that they way they choose to present themselves is seen as something worth respecting:

"We didn't ask to be role models - it just happened, which is the biggest compliment ever and if people want to look up to us and do whatever we're doing and be like us just by being ourselves then that's amazing."

Songstress Jade Thirlwall said: "With our first album we did have a responsibility to do that because we gained the younger fan base but as we're maturing, our fans mature with us and we are just four normal girls and we're not perfect."

4. On wanting equal pay for women:

The group sat down for an interview with Wonderland magazine in 2014 and spoke about the gender pay gap, and Perrie Edwards revealed that it's disgusting to think that women are valued less in the world of work: "I just don't understand it. Why should we be paid less because we have boobs and a vajayjay?"

Leigh-Anne Pinnock added: "If things don't change women in the film industry should just go on strike. Could you imagine if all women in the film industry just stopped working or turned down parts until they got equal pay?"

5. On being bold and not shying away from experimenting:

Little Mix's latest album, 'Get Weird', showcased an impressive evolution and they told Digital Spy that they scrapped an entire record's worth of material because it wasn't up to their standard and they knew they wanted to do something that would really push their boundaries:

"It took so long because we were looking for something that would surprise people. We wanted to change the game a bit, and 'Black Magic' is very pop. [...] We tested some of them (original songs for the latest album) and we worked on them again to make them better, but we didn't feel like it was wow enough. It didn't show the potential that we have."
