Lorde: 'I'm not interested what comes along with being a girl and writing pop music'

Lorde has professed her dislike of what is associated with females and pop music.

The 17-year-old singer broke into the mainstream in 2013 with the hit single 'Royals', but she has often come across as a more thoughtful artist than a lot of other young singers.

Speaking in a conversation with Conor Oberst for the New York Times, Lorde said that she associates more with "faceless" musicians who avoid fame than big stars.

She said: "When I started making music, I realised that the people who I idolised were electronic musicians who were, 99 percent of the time, faceless; they never have to put their faces on shirts. I was like, I want to be those guys because I really am not interested in all that comes along with being a girl and writing pop music.

"But I definitely had to come to terms with the fact that what I was trying to do would have more power if I kind of showed myself and became someone that people could attach thoughts to."

Lorde and Oberst's conversation happened the day after the New Zealander bagged two gongs at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 18).
