Lorde's 'Royals' soars to No. 1 in UK singles chart

Teen singer-songwriter Lorde has raced to the top of the UK singles chart with her track ‘Royals’.

The New Zealand 16-year-old is the youngest solo artist to debut at No. 1 in the UK singles chart since 15-year-old Billie Piper’s 1998 hit ‘Because We Want To’.

Lorde fought off stiff competition this week from X Factor victor James Arthur with his latest release ‘You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Loves You’ going into the chart at No. 2.

‘Counting Stars’ by OneRepublic, which topped the chart last week, has now slipped to No. 3. Katy Perry, meanwhile, is clawing her way back up the chart with ‘Roar’ rising two places to No. 4.

The top five is rounded off this week by a new entry from Showtek featuring DJs We Are Loud! and vocalist Sonny Wilson with ‘Booyah’ at No. 5.

Other new entries to this week’s singles chart include X Factor boy band Union J with ‘Beautiful Life’ at No. 8, Eminem at No. 22 with ‘Survival’, Justin Bieber’s ‘Hold Tight’ at No. 28, Icona Pop’s ‘All Night’ at No. 31 and Sean Paul celebrates his fifteenth top 40 track as ‘Turn It Up’ is new in at No. 35.

This week’s highest climber comes from ‘Blurred Lines’ crooner Robin Thicke as ‘Give It 2 U’ rockets 13 places up the chart to reach No. 15.
