Sixteen-year-old sensation Lorde has spoken out against pop music’s use of shock tactics to generate attention.

Lorde – whose real name is Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor – has taken the pop charts by storm herself recently with her No. 1 single ‘Royals’.

However she has hit out at pop’s more conventional star’s and their performance styles in an interview with Q magazine.

Lorde told the mag: “I'm a feminist so certain things about pop music I find frustrating.”

The ‘Tennis Court’ singer went on: “I think pop is scarily powerful. There are a lot of shock tactics these days: people trying to outdo each other, which will probably culminate in two people f**king on stage at the Grammys.”

Two recent pop music performances that have been subject to complaints and criticism are Miley Cyrus’ rendition of ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Blurred Lines’ earlier this year at the MTV VMAs, and Lady Gaga’s recent appearance on the UK edition of The X Factor.

In order to stop herself from being distracted by other artists in the industry, Lorde has a tactic of her own. She explained:

“I try to keep my blinkers on and focus on making music.”

Lorde will find out whether 'Royals' can hang on to the No. 1 spot in the UK singles chart for a second week later on today (November 3).
