Lorde on modern rappers: 'They sing about such opulence and I can't relate to it'

'Royals' hitmaker Lorde has hit out about the topics modern artists tend to sing or rap about because a lot of the time they're unrelatable and deal with themes people can only ever aspire towards.

Speaking to Interview magazine, the songstress confessed that the opulence in the lyrics of songs by the likes of Nicki Minaj, Drake and Lana Del Rey is too much and makes her feels alienated as a listener:

“Around the middle of last year I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as pop singers like Lana Del Rey. They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn’t relate to me — or anyone that I knew."

"I began thinking, ‘How are we listening to this? It’s completely irrelevant’.”

During an interview with The Observer, Lorde added that despite popular opinion she doesn't think the majority of people would look at the lives of pop stars and feel any draw to that: “I don't think people look at how pop stars live and feel anything aspirational at all.”
