Macklemore and Ryan Lewis named best songwriters of 2013

'Otherside' superstars Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have topped a poll that set out to find the best songwriters of last year.

The research, conducted by Music Week, aimed to discover the songwriters who had the biggest impact on the industry throughout 2013 and the American pair came out on top thanks to the global success of their hit singles 'Thrift Shop' and 'Can't Hold Us'.

Paul Williams, the head of business analysis with Music Week, explained the findings in a statement: "Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were virtually unknown in the UK at the beginning of 2013, so it is quite some feat they finished as the year's most successful hit songwriters."

"Their victory was bad luck on Pharrell Williams who had his hand in three No.1 singles last year, but as he shared the writing on 'Blurred Lines' and 'Get Lucky' with others ended up with a lower score."

Pharrell Williams came in at No.2, Bruno Mars finished third, and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder was in fourth place. 'Let Her Go' hitmaker Passenger, whose real name is Mike Rosenberg, came in at No.5.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis picked up an impressive 4 GRAMMYs at this year's ceremony, including the Best New Artist and Best Rap Album prizes.
