Maroon 5 to go back 'where they started' on new album

Maroon 5's Adam Levine says the band have gone back to their roots on their next album.

The group are due to unleash their new effort 'V' on September 2 and singer Levine told USA Today that the collection will mark a slight shift from their previous album.

He said: "It's more along the lines of where we started. The tone of the album is still poppy, but it's not as sweet or carefree as [2012's 'Overexposed']. There's more depth and it's a different tone, it's not as self-aware."

Speaking about his songwriting inspiration, Levine added:

"At this point in time, you just realise you can only write good music if you're really self-aware about how you feel. I don't really believe that you have to be heartbroken or particularly happy or sad. It all comes down to, 'How are you harvesting life and trying to put it into music?'. Wherever you're at as a human being, you can express that in a song."

Maroon 5's last album 'Overexposed' meanwhile spawned hits such as 'One More Night' and 'Payphone'.
