Introducing: Senseless Live

A collaboration between John Glassey and Kim Sykes, Senseless Live has become one of Canada’s hottest DJ and vocalist duos. Debuting on the Dance music scene as a tandem with their single ‘Ricochet’, Senseless Live have managed to go a long way in just eight months of working together.

Coming from different backgrounds, having Kim growing up into songwriting and John mastering production techniques, the duo has managed to find the perfect balance to create their unique voice. Both John and Kim have had multiple successes on an individual basis, having been associated with some heavyweight names in the industry such as: John Acquaviva, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Joeski, Nathan Barato, Carlo Lio, Fred Everything, Kevin Yost, Jonny White, Parnell Paul and Kenny Glasgow amongst others.

They have now come together to introduce a fresh take on the Deep, Progressive and House genres and they’ve got some big projects in the pipeline for 2015. We’ve sat down with Senseless Live to get to know them better and discuss their current and future plans.

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. How are you and what are you up to at the moment?

At the moment we have just finished up our first album ‘Intentions’ due to be released July 6th, 2015 via Capital Heaven Records. Since the completion of our album we have been honing our live set  and getting prepared for summer shows and promoting upcoming releases .We have also started some new projects with an anticipated release this fall.

Where are you guys based?

Edmonton, AB, Canada.

How long have you been working together?

Kim and I started working together eight months ago to collaborate on a single track.

How did you guys join up to form this duo and why did you want to work together?

John’s production company IO hosted a series of events featuring innovator of Detroit Techno, Derrick May and Just BE aka Bushwacka from the UK in which I (Kim) sang some original live vocals for opening act DJ/producer Parnell Paul (PBP).

We had several mutual friends who encouraged us to work together creatively.

Do you consider yourselves to be more of a live DJ act or producer duo?

We have started out as a production duo and are enjoying the transition into a live act.

Where did the name Senseless Live come from and what’s the meaning behind it?

Pat Pattison once said “don’t let reality get in the way of truth”, this really resonated with us. Senseless seems like the most apt description that encapsulates this idea.

For those who are not familiar with your style. Where would you place your sound?

We feel our sound is a Deep, Progressive, Tech House sound.

Walk us through the projects you’ve released in the past months.

Our first single ‘Speak’ was released on John’s Label JG Records. This was the first track we created together. We have since revised it and the new version will be available on our Intentions Album. Also, our second release ‘Ricochet’ came out on Capital Heaven’s Miami compilation this past March, 2015

Out of all the releases you’ve had so far, which one is the most memorable?

We both agree that ‘Ricochet’ was a real turning point in the establishment and direction of our sound.

Which are the most important gigs you’ve played up till now?

Kim and I (John) have performed a few times with a live DJ set and vocals. We started to perform our full set June 20th for our album release at The Mercury Room in Edmonton. John as a DJ has had great opportunities performing with legends like John Acquaviva, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Joeski, Nathan Barato, Carlo Lio, Fred Everything, Kevin Yost, Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow.  This helped John build up the confidence to keep creative and active as a performer in the underground scene.

Which is the most exciting high-point in your career so far?

John: as a producer getting my track Afrosonic Drums signed to Kevin Saunderson’s Iconic Label KMS Records this year on their Miami Compilation.

Kim: being on stage with Kaskade and experiencing the energy and connection he held with his audience.

We’ve heard you’ve got some big plans and releases coming up. What can you tell us about that?

Yes, actually the remix EP of our second single ‘Ricochet’ is coming out June 22, 2015 on Capital Heaven with remixes from Framewerk, James Daxx and many more. As stated earlier The Intentions Album is due to release July 6th, 2015 which we are both really excited about.

What’s your touring schedule like this year? Where can we catch up with you?

After our album release June 20th in Edmonton we are headlining at The Astral Harvest Music and Art Festival in Northern Alberta July 2nd-5th on its 8th Year. In September we are traveling east to Saskatoon and back to Edmonton to play The Inspiration Series opening for ‘Dance Spirit’ at the Starlite Room in Edmonton. We also have some potential bookings in Vancouver and Calgary.

How would you describe your work relationship as a tandem?

Coming from different backgrounds we each bring our own set of skills to the table. I come from a songwriting background where as John has a very strong understanding of the production side which enables our ideas to become songs.

John, what’s the best and worst thing about collaborating with Kim?

Good question, well the best thing about working with Kim is that she has an unbelievable voice that fits my style of production. I have been searching for a voice to work with for so longs and I feel blessed to be working with her. The worst thing about working with Kim is that I can’t tell you because she is sitting right beside me!

Kim what’s the best and worst thing about collaborating with John?

One thing I really like about working with John is his energy and enthusiasm for the project. It definitely makes it easy to go into the studio everyday working with someone who feels as passionate and driven as I do. Worst thing, hmm… probably trying to keep up with his high energy!

If you both had to choose another partner to collaborate with, who would it be?

John: Really I have been searching for a vocalist like Kim. And now since I have had the opportunity to create music with her I don’t feel there is another person I would rather create music with in the studio.

Kim: Not sure if I could pick someone else at this time, John and I have gotten into a highly productive groove. In regards to my  ‘dream’ creative mentor, I have always had a great admiration for Thom Yorke and his amazing ability to relate to the listener by inviting us into his world through a poetic yet highly integral expression that is always progressing album to album.

Anything to add/shout outs?

Big shout out to Alec and Darren from Capital Heaven for believing in our sound and getting our music out to the underground dance community. And we want to thank all the listeners on Soundcloud that have been giving us their support!

Thanks guys!
