One Direction named world's most popular act in terms of sales and streams

One Direction have been honoured with the title of Global Recording Artists of 2013.

The IFPI, who represent the worldwide recording industry, have confirmed that the British boyband were the most popular act last year when it came to sales, downloads and streams.

It includes global record sales as well as hits on online platforms such as Spotify and YouTube.

The group released their third album 'Midnight Memories' in November and it was the UK's best selling record of the year.

Speaking about their new title, Niall Horan commented: "Incredible news! It's great to have a chart that includes everything from iTunes and record stores, to YouTube and Spotify. Again a huge thank you to all of our fans for such an amazing 2013."

Eminem, Justin Timerblake, Bruno Mars and Katy Perry completed the list's top five.
