One Direction's 'Midnight Memories' named world's top selling British album in 2013

One Direction's 'Midnight Memories' has topped a list of the best-selling British albums on a global level last year.

The group only released the record in November, but it has been named by the BPI as Britain's most successful album of 2013.

One in eight records sold in the world last year were British and No.2 on the list is Mumford & Sons' 'Babel', whilst Adele's monolithic 2011 effort '21' is No.3.

One Direction feature three times on the list's top ten, with 'Take Me Home' at No.5 and 'Up All Night' at No.10.

The BPI's Gennaro Castaldo commented: "For home-grown talent to have recorded the world's biggest-selling album six out of the last seven years is a phenomenal achievement that says a great deal about the popularity of British music around the world, especially taking into account the fact that one in every eight albums sold globally are by UK artists.

"Aside from the obvious contribution to British exports, this success underlines the vital role that our music and artists play in promoting the appeal of British culture around the world."
