One Direction's 'Fireproof' downloaded 1.1 million times

One Direction's new song was downloaded 1.1 million times in just 24 hours.

On Monday (September 8) the group put the track 'Fireproof' on their official website for a free download over a 24-hour period.

The tune is the first song to be released from the band's upcoming album 'FOUR', which will land on November 17.

Label Columbia have confirmed that the track was downloaded 1.1 million times across the world during its 24-hour window.

Billboard report that a free single of the week on the US iTunes Store usually generates around 300,000 downloads.

Twitter added that during the peak of the 'Fireproof' frenzy, the topic was generating 5,369 tweets per minute.

'FOUR' meanwhile topped the iTunes charts in 67 countries worldwide when it went up for pre-order.
