PETA join call for One Direction to remove chimp cameo from new video

Animal rights group PETA have added their weight to criticism of One Direction's new video.

The boyband are due to release their 'Steal My Girl' promo clip on Friday (October 24) and photos released on Thursday (October 23) from the shoot show the lads working with a chimp.

The animal is seen wearing a chain leash during takes and this, in addition to the use of the chimp, has prompted criticism.

Primate charity Wild Futures penned a letter on Thursday to educate the group on the dangers and ethics of using animals like chimps for work.

Animal rights group PETA have now called on One Direction to remove the chimp's cameo from the clip and pledge to avoid working with wild animals in the future.

They add that the chimp's trainer Steve Martin has a chequered past when it comes to animal welfare.

PETA concluded: "PETA is asking that the boys immediately cut the scene with the chimpanzee and the other wild animals, pledge never to work with wild animals again and donate a percentage of the proceeds from the song to an organisation that rescues chimpanzees and cares for them properly."
