One Direction star Harry Styles has shown his support to the people currently held hostage in Sydney.

A gunman - who police now believe is Iranian-born cleric Man Haron Monis - is holding a number of people hostage at a cafe in the Australian city.

Some people have escaped from the scene, but many are still stuck in the building.

One Direction star Styles is among the celebrities who have tweeted their support to those involved in the hostage situation.

He wrote today (December 15): "Thinking of everyone involved in Sydney. Hope everyone gets out safely. Send love."

Styles' band meanwhile performed with Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood on the X Factor final on Sunday (December 14).
