British Asian Trust thanks 'generous' One Direction fans after Zayn birthday donation

The British Asian Trust has thanked One Direction fans after they raised over $11,000 (£7,300) for the charity in honour of Zayn Malik's birthday.

The singer celebrated his 22nd birthday on Monday (January 12) and a group called 1D Fans Give earlier this year launched an appeal to raise money for the British Asian Trust in tribute.

Malik is an ambassador for the charity and at the time of writing, the fan appeal has raised $11,339 (£7,520).

The Trust have issued a statement of thanks to One Direction fans, with executive director Hitan Mehta commenting:

"We thank One Direction fans for their generous contributions. We are honoured to have Zayn Malik as part of our British Asian Trust family; he is a young man with immense talent and a dedicated following.

"Our celebrity ambassadors have been champions for our causes and have helped us unlock the potential of the poor and vulnerable in South Asia."
