One Direction's stylist: 'I originally wanted them to be like the male equivalent of the Spice Girls'

The stylist for One Direction has revealed that she initially looked to the Spice Girls for inspiration when deciding how to dress the band.

Caroline Watson told The Muse that she wanted each member of the group to have their own distinct style when they found fame in the early 2010s.

She said: "I had this idea that I wanted them to be like the male equivalent to the Spice Girls, but being kind of cool. When I say 'the Spice Girls', I mean being in a group but having an identity.

"Everyone wore different things and no two girls looked the same. I wanted to create that with the boys. It was obviously a big Simon Cowell project, but I don't think anybody knew how much it was going to blow up in the way in which it did. I think the look had a lot to do with that. Because people buy into nice things, you know? And it was my job to make them look great."

One Direction originally rose to fame on the UK X Factor in 2010, with the group finishing third.
