One Direction insist new song 'Drag Me Down' is not about Zayn Malik

One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson has stated that the band's new single is not inspired by Zayn Malik.

The group recently surprised fans by releasing the track 'Drag Me Down' without any notice.

Many speculated that the lyrics of the song could refer to former member Malik, who quit the band in March.

However, Tomlinson told Capital FM that the gossip couldn't be further from the truth.

He said: "Are you trying to look for some kind of controversial answer here? You’re not getting it!

"The song is not about that obviously."

Referring to the instant global chart success of 'Drag Me Down', the Brit added:

"[We're] obviously over the moon hearing stuff like that. We’ve been working really, really hard on this album and that single in particular so to have the reaction that it’s had? We can’t complain!"

Malik meanwhile had praised the track on Twitter after its release, telling his followers that he is "proud" of the four singers.
